|"Hi. I am a healthy 24-year old female. I was surfing the internet when I came across your site and thought I would share my encounters with aspartame.
I never came into contact with aspartame as a child. We never had anything diet in the house. It was not until I went to a friend's house and they only had diet cola. It was the first time I had ever really come into contact with aspartame. After drinking just one can of cola, about an hour later, I experienced my first anxiety attack ever, along with extreme dizziness.
I was so scared that I called my mother to come pick me up and take me to the hospital. While I was there, they figured out that I was having an anxiety attack. I didn't realize this was caused by the aspartame until I got home and told my sister what had happened. She told me she had an experience like mine. After that day, I never ingested any artificial sweeteners by choice.
I never experienced anything like it until seven years later. I went on vacation to visit my friend in the United States. We went out to dinner and I ordered a cola. The restaurant was out of regular cola, so they gave me diet instead. I realized the minute I finished the glass. I began getting dizzy and experiencing an anxiety attack.
I thought for the longest time there was something wrong with me. All of my friends were eating and drinking all sorts of yummy things that I will never be able to eat. The thing I miss most is gum. There used to be gums that didn't contain any artificial sweeteners, but they are long gone. My biggest fear is that one day aspartame will replace sugar altogether and I will be left with nothing to eat.
Thanks for reading. I recently began reading about sucralose and have been thinking about trying it to see if it will affect me in the same way."
Thank you N.V. for sharing your story with us.
